Hey Joe, a GP38 will out switch any of these newer diesels. A Dash 9 is a terrible switcher; if you try to notch out for a quick start, it feels like the rear truck is going to run past the front truck. When any older diesel is in the consist, such as a 38 or 40, the smaller engine leads the Dash by the hand, so to speak, because the 38 will reverse and start moving while the Dash is still trying to load up. The best switcher of all the road diesels around today is a GP38, because it loads fast, so it starts fast, and it can generally get stopped quicker. [A GP38 can't hold a candle to an old time switch engine like an SW9 or an Alco S2/4. The 38 has more horsepower, but the old yard engines did what they did faster.] Those old engines would respond to my hands as fast as my hands moved; this newer stuff slows ME down, as I have to wait for it to respond. But as I said, the GP38 is a better engine to work with compared to what's out there today.
