I just saw some slides of an GE E-44 with Amtrak Painting. I know that there where 8 E-44 Amtrak got by New Jersey Transit. What happened to them? Were they ever in regular service?

As I recall, Amtrak bought them to be used for maintenance of way. I saw a couple of them stored in Amtrak's electric locomotive facility in Wilmington DE. The problem was that the locomotives had to have the PCB's in their cooling system drained and replaced in order to compy with EPA regulations. This proved to be too expensive and the locomotives were never used.
