Ed's comment regarding terminal roads is on the mark. BRC has recently updated its fleet (now GP38-2's and de-turboed SD40's) and IHB is in the process of doing the same. IHB's new road power is rebuilt GP40's and their SW1500's will be rebuilt. Most local and terminal power in the future will be rebuilds, probably GP38's and de-turboed GP40's & SD40's. 645-powered switchers will probably also be rebuilt.

I recall a photo some years ago, probably in Trains, of a 4 unit F lashup (ABBA) doing some "local" switching... As has been said - they'll use what they have.

Anybody remember the Soo Line using a single F unit on a way freight? F40PH probably not for yardwork, bad visibility, and I think they are in Run 8 all the time, sure to upset the neighbors. However, the carbodies could be removed, like the CF7s.

A short line in Saskatchewan did use a modified truck that looked like a heavy Hy-rail vehicle from the Maintenance of Way department. I'm not sure how well it worked out.
