profesional hire

I've been work for a local shortline for the past six months as a conductor. I'm really thinking about trying to get on with CSX. I talked to the head of the conductor trainee program at a technical college about getting hired. The tuition for enrollment is around $4200,but I was told that if I stayed at my current job and got a minimum of one year's experience, I could be hired on as a profesional, and probably not have to pay for school. Is this true? Is it easier for someone with experience to get hired with a class1? Or do they prefer people with no experience so they can be tought ''their way''. What are your opinions?
Anyone else ever been here? Thanks.
