Today we mourn the loss of country music legend Johnny Cash. I won't go into long eulogy but he will be missed. I always enjoyed all of his songs, especially the railroad songs like Casey Jones, Orange Blossum Special, Ballad of Johnny Henry, Folsom Prison Blues, and many, many more.

My question for you forum readers:
Has anyone seen his latest music video 'Hurt'? What steam engine, #4501, is that he rides in? What vintage video is that from? I'm sure if you watch the news or CMT today you might catch a glimpse of it. I don't watch music videos hardly at all, but of all of them I feel that is one of the most powerful and moving versions music videos of all time.

.....Yes, Johnny Cash seemed to be one who loved to be around railroads. He sang his share of railroad songs for sure. As for the engine, 4501 I've not seen the video but it may be the former Southern 2-8-2 number 12 pictured in a beautiful painting in TRAINS, April, 2003, page 66-67. That engine [now green], visited our city some years ago and it sure was a pretty one. Johnny Cash will be missed by his fans and the music world.

I remember him doing commercials for Lionel when I was a Kid during the 70's, must have been around 75-77. I did get to see him in concert once, great entertainer he was.

I really don't want to dwell on his memory in trains, although I do love them. I would rather miss Cash for his music, not what train was in his music video. I loved his music.

I will miss Johnny Cash and his music. It was sad that his wife June had just passed a few months ago. Knowing that she co-wrote many of his numerous hits I thought that he because of his failing health would have retired but he had kept going until his death. Hurt was very good and the train and setting I believe forshadowed his death. I had the tremendous opportunity to meet him in London and have notheing but the upmost respect for him and his music. Good Bye to " the man in black". We have lost a great railroader. God Bless you.[:(]

Johnny Cash spoke for all of us... showed us what it is to be honest, and humble, and great, all at the same time. Truly an inspiration. He loved us, and loved America -- and loved trains, because they are a part of what makes us a great country. I'll miss him.

Johnny Cash and his talent for music composure will surely be missed by all of us, but in his death is a lesson for all. Certainly 71 years old is not all that old in these days of medical miracles and almost daily advances in technology, but we should all take note of what a really hard life of alchahol and drugs can do to you...regardless of how much money you may have, that stuff will kill you prematurely, not matter what!

Southern 4501 is at the Tennessee Valley Railroad in Chattanooga Tn.She hasn't ran in the last few years as she is just too much engine for their every day trains and they generaly use diesels for their excursions on the COG. Johhny Cash lived the life he wrote and sang about. His personal shortcomings cost him a family, and eventually his life. But his musical talent will be with us always. He had a knack for involving us in the music, and making us forget our own shortcomings for a while. God's peace to the man in black.
