Special Hiawatha train in Milwaukee Thursday
Posted by zardoz on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 8:11 PM
I have it on good authority that on Thursday the 11th the UP is running some kind of special train from Chicago to Milwaukee. I believe it has something to do with the Hiawatha car that was on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum this summer going home.

The Waukesha job is supposed to pick up the car from Mitchell Yard and take it to Butler, where it will be joined with the special train.

I do not know what time this will happen, what line the train will run on, or where it will be going. I just wanted to alert Milwaukee area fans to be alert Thursday.

Hopefully, they will bring it home, TO CHICAGO, rail capitol of the world. True home of the Hiawatha!!! [ CHICAGO, Milwaukee, St.Paul and Pacific R.R.]
(Sorry Zardoz could not pass it up.)

Pardon me, HOME of the Hiawatha? Chicago? The Milwaukee Road's car shops were right here in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Employed 10,000 people at one time, largest employer in the city at the time. We graciously shared the Hiawatha with Chicago.

OK Dave, maybe Tim was only 25% correct.

After all, Tim, the car was on display in Milwaukee, not Chicago. Just because the railroad had Chicago in it's name.....and what was the contracted name people used for the railroad? The "MIlwaukee" !!

But we cannot deny that Chicago IS the railroad capital.

The car was designed by a Milwaukee man. The railroad's shops were in Milwaukee. All the classic depot photos of the Milwaukee Road are taken at the Milwaukee Depot.
And the author who has done more to document the railroad than anyone, Jim Scribbins, is a Milwaukeean.
