New Operation Lifesaver Engine?

New Operation Lifesaver Engine?

NS 9251 northbound on BNSF Emporia Sub, probably a Dash-9. It was getting dark so it was hard to tell if those were the right numbers but I saw the Operation Lifesaver logo with a big 25 and a circle around it. Has anyone seen this before? What's the significance of the 25? is it years? This is the first I've seen of this design. This train was pulling trailers, some were trailer chassis only and some were chassis with trailer. It'll probably make Kansas City by midnight and then spend some time in the yard on the fuel pad and routine inspections. From there on who knows where it'll go.

Speaking of trailer trains, does anyone know how long an engine or set of engines stay with a transcontinental train? Say the container train starts in LA and goes to Chicago where it changes railroads, do the engines usually stay with it the whole way (barring any incidents or breakdowns)?

Say that BNSF took the "Z" or hot transcontinental train to Chicago. Once they get to Chicago they take their engines off then they put NS or CSX locos on it (whoever gets it from BNSF). Or they might just leave the original power on there.

As far as the operation lifesaver engine, I've never seen it before. But the 25 might stand for their 25th anniversary of being around. [^] David

I have seen this out in Decatur once. I also have a model of it on my HO scale railroad. 25 years, I think, but yet not sure, may be how long they have been involved with the Operation Lifesaver Campaign. I think that there are three NS units with that decal. Correct me if i am wrong.

the 25 is for the 25th aniversery for operation lifesaver. and there is very few of these engines running around. the answer to the other question is the power stays with the train til it reaches destination.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I also did some searching on the internet and found an article on the 25th anniversery.

It was begun in 1972, I believe, which would make it 31 years this year and here's the link to the full article:
