should electric trains have aux. power supplies??

while watching the fun on the east coast last week i got to thinking....it would be a great idea to add auxillary diesel power supplies to electric passenger trains. <br /> <br />i was thinking of something along the line of a small generator that could supply power to the lights and air conditioning for several hours, or maybe something larger that supplies just enough power to move the train along to the next station. <br /> <br />what do y'all think?
