Trains Through Rochelle
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, August 30, 2003 6:46 PM
Hey forum. I have watched the Rochelle Webcam for a few years and have started to wonder what trains go through there. Could some one please post a list of the trains that go through there (UP and BNSF.) Also are there more trains in morning or the evening. And ive seen the BNSF local that goes of the BNSF tracks and goes by the UP what do they switch? Any info would be great. Thank you.

From what i saw it was mostly intermodal. Amtrak might go through there(Does it?), thats my guess. Traffic is pretty heavy there, but you can't see much at night, only the headlights.

Railfanner (a.k.a. Jeff) me and Jeff go way back, about 3 months or so [:D]. Anyway, no offence buddy but you were a little unclear, I think what Jeff is trying to ask us is what are the symbols (Train Symbols) of the trains that go through Rochelle (UP and BNSF). And for the BNSF local, I think he is asking what indusdries does it switch.

Most of the traffic on the UP is either intermodal or coal with a little general merchandise thrown in on occassion. This line goes from Chicago to Council Bluffs and beyond. You will see lots and lots of coal here and also an aweful lot of intermodal on UP. The new Global III intermodal facility is just west of the diamonds by about a mile or so and now many of the UP intermodals begin or end there instead of Global II as in the past.

The BNSF line is the C&I (Chicago & Iowa line which begins in my home town of Aurora, IL where it splits off of the BNSF triple track main into and out of Chicago (the other line that splits off at Aurora is the double track line througn Galesburg to Denver, etc. and then California). The C&I goes up the Miss. River through Savannah and LaCrosse, accross the river and then on up into Minneapolis/St. Paul. Most of the traffic here will be intermodal coming and going from the west coast ports of Seattle or Portland. Virtually no coal on the BNSF as it all comes from Powder River area via the Galesburg line previously mentioned.

Amtrak does not normally travel either of these routes, but has been known to detour on the C&I line when there is trouble up in Wisconsin and they need another way to get to and from Minneapolis, but I don't recall ever seeing an Amtrak train (perhaps with the exception of a private special, etc.) on the UP main line here.

As to your question of the BNSF local interchanging with the UP at Rochelle, there is a DelMonte plant just about a quarter mile west of the UP/BNSF diamonds on the south side of the UP main and just before the Global III yards, and I believe BNSF picks up and drops off some cars there, but mostly it is served by UP. I belive there is a little bit of interchange traffic as well between the roads here, but not much (UP still has trackaage rights on the BNSF Chicago main into the city by way of the old SP trackage rights aggreement of olden days, we see about two UP trains a day through Aurora because of this).

Hope this helps. Jim

I think it is owned by Illinois Railnet, which I heard on a Rochelle Video I watched. I have seen an Amtrak on the BNSF line before, I thought was maybe taking a detour after a storm that happend a day before. The other day I saw a UP Metra going west on the UP main. So then I posted the Why Was There Just A Metra in Rochelle???!!!!! post. That just happened because of the "Rochelle Days". So the only passenger trains that you will see will be an occasional detouring Amtrak. Far as "REAL" trains, on the UP you will see a few manifests, a good amount of coal trains, and the majority is intermodal, or trailer trains, a few going to or coming from Global III. On the BNSF you will see about two westbound manifests, and about two eastbound manifests a day. You will see a couple grain trains with some CSX power, a couple locals, which some will switch in the DelMonte distributing warehouse, but the major amount of trains on the BNSF is by a long shot...... intermodal and trailer trains. I'm sorry if I over did my reply, I just know a lot about Rochelle and what runs through there because I live so close and I went there for two straight years!!!!![:)][:)][:)][:D][:D][:D][8D][8D][8D][;)][;)][;)][:p][:p][:p]

As to the track that goes south from Rochelle, BNSF leaves the area in a southerly direction (nearly perpendicular under the East-West Tollway, I-88) before it curves to the east toward Aurora. The MILW used to continue south toward Mendota (it used the BN track to get through Rochelle), but that line's been abandoned for a long time (roadbed still evident in places along I-39).

The ex-CNW main used to handle detour moves for the Zephyr (probably San Francisco Zephyr at the time), from Western Avenue to Council Bluffs.
