In the January, 2001, Trains, Ed King mentions he managed the Rock Island commuter service from 1977 to the railroad shutdown in 1980. He says it was a money-losing operation, with fares covering only 45% of the cost. Also, related to comments here about equipment, he writes, "the Rock didn't spend a nickel on the commuter service it didn't have to spend (it didn't have much to spend on anything), so equipment and track maintenance was cut to the bare bones." <br /> <br />
