I'LL GO ONE BETTER!! IN THE SUMMER OF 1966 NEAR MENDON, NY. ON THE LEHIGH VALLEY MAIN LINE, A MAN DECIDED TO END HIS LIFE AT AROUND 7 PM. BY PULLING IN FRONT OF THE TRAIN AT THE LAST SECOND. THE DAILY P&L JCT TURN OUT OF MANCHESTER WITH A PAIR OF RS-2s ON THE HEADEND OF 32 MOSTLY EMPTY COVERED HOPPER CARS, STRUCK THE 59 FORD AND SHEARED OFF THE FRONT END AT THE FIREWALL. THE VICTIM WAS PULLED OUT OF THE CAR WITH THE STEERING WHEEL AND THROWN UNDER THE LOCOMOTIVE. AFTER ABOUT 2 HOURS THE LOCAL AMBULANCE, FD. AND RR EMPLOYEES PULLED A BADLY DISMEMBERED BODY FROM UNDER THE TRAIN. I WAS 16 AT THE TIME AND I CAN STILL SEE THE SCENE IN MY MIND JUST AS IF I WAS LOOKING AT IT NOW. THE PASSENGER SECTION OF THE CAR WAS SPUN AROUND BUT HAD VERY LITTLE DAMAGE. THE ENGINEER WAS TAKEN HOME AND I HEARD A FEW YEARS LATTER FROM A RR MAN THAT IT WAS A LONG TIME BEFORE HE RETURNED TO WORK. THE TRAIN WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 40 MPH AT THE TIME THE CABOOSE STOPPED AT THE CROSSING. I ALONG WITH A FEW FRIENDS WALK THE TRACKS THERE WHILE HUNTING A COUPLE WEEKS LATER AND FOUND SOME SMALL BONES AND TISSUE FROM THE VICTIM. AFTER THAT WE AVOIDED THAT SECTION ON OUR HUNTING TRIPS. A MONTH OR SO AGO I WAS WALKING IN THAT SAME STRECH OF ROADBED ( NOW ABANDON) WITH MY DOG AND REMEMBERED THAT NIGHT 37 YEARS AGO. IN 1970 I JOINED THE LOCAL FIRE DEPT. AND ON OCASSION SOME OF THE VETERANS WOULD BRING UP THAT NIGHT. THEY CALLED IT A BASKET CASE BECAUSE, WELL, I'LL LEAVE IT AT THAT. AS I SIT BY A CSX (ex NYC) CROSSING IN FAIRPORT ON OCASSION. I NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT THE HECK PEOPLE THINK WHEN A TRAIN ROLLS BY AT 60 PLUS, ALL THAT WEIGHT AT SPEED. GUESS I NEVER WILL UNDERSTAND. EVERY KID IN SCHOOL SHOULD SEE THAT FILM THAT YOU TALKED ABOUT. IT IS VERY IMPRESSIVE. SHOW THEM THE WHOLE TAPE. MAYBE THEY WOULD CATCH ON. WELL I GUESS YOU STRUCK A NERVE IN ME ON THIS ONE. THANKS TOOLEY
