August 16-17, 2003

Live steam locomotives return to the National Railroad Museum. The Museum will host three Steam Weekends – August 16-17, September 20-21 and October 25-26 – this year. The Museum’s train will be pulled by a Heisler-type logging locomotive. There will be a number of special steam related programs throughout the grounds, including explorations of steam locomotives in the collection, railroad story time for children, and steam locomotive video presentations in the theater.

You know the 4-8-4, 261 is owned by the National Railroad Museum. It's been in Green bay several times. I believe last year it was there and would have been there this year if it wasn't for ins. costs.

Is this the same Heisler that was previously at the Kettle Moraine Scenic RR in North Lake WI?
I have to say based on my visit to the Green Bay Museum this last May as part of the Chicago & North Western Historical Society Convention that it must be the "most improved" museum around. It used to be a bunch of stuff rusting under the trees. Alas they still have some stuff outside that needs to get under cover pronto.
I remember when the Green Bay Museum always had steam -- first an LS&I 2-8-0 and then a rather tired old 0-4-0T which I understand finally wore out one side of tires due to endless running on the tight curve loop of track.
Years and years ago a friend of mine just happened to be at the Green Bay Museum when they had a special guest star steam locomotive then on a US tour -- the General, of Civil War fame. So he got to ride behind a 4-4-0 built in the 1850s.
