Do any rail companies still transport livestock? I know in this area (North KY) I do not see it. I didn't know if maybe out west they would or not. Did it all end in the steam days? I see the tractor trailers every now and then with pigs but that's about it.

I was told one time also that Kahn's in Cincinnati had a place to unload their pigs for their plant. Don't know how true it was but I do favor to believe it.

Cincinnati was called porkopolis for how many pigs were brought for slaughter.I dont know of any railroads hauling livestock anymore.just whats in the refrigerated boxcars after processing.

I think UP was the last in the states around 1992, hauling pigs from Nebraska to California. Conrail had a move from the midwest to North New Jersy, I think this lasted to around 1984. Some parts of Canada had livestock moves into the 80's. I think livestock is still moved by rail in other countries, (New Zealand, Russia?) You never know maybe some enterpising regional might give it a try, but I believe the railroads were happy to get out of this business.

UPRR still hauls pigs on occasion to Farmer John in LA (City of Vernon, CA), getting increasingly rare (no longer in the funky M/W green UPRR cars - did they go to scrap?)

Food Fair Stores in Philadelphia received livestock in their own cars in to the early 70's. They owned 80' cars...the lower level was bright green, the top silver, with the FF logo. These cars often appeared on B&O's New England 88, a regular freight from midwest to Phila. and NE. FF was bought out by Safeway or someone; the stock moves promptly stopped.

I think the slaughterhouses were moved to where the animals were so the need to ship by rail dried up.
