ungern: i used a hyperbole for the fact that fuel used by switching is insignificant to the cost of electrification... ;) <br /> <br />Think about it - UPRR Bailey Yard has 315 miles of track. Wires cost ~1mil/mile. So to electrify you'd need to spend $315 million. That money will cover switching in that yard for several hundread years ;)
