The first unit went into serice in 5/69 and the last one was withdrawn from regular service in 1985 or 1986. That's a service life of 15-16 years which is about standard for most diesel locomotives. It is true that they were stored from 5/80 until 1984 due to the recession. Ths was due in part to their great size and the fact that other roads would not accept them as runthrough power. They were very successful on the UP, running 20,000 miles a month in the hottest intermodal serice. They were very fast as well as big.
