65 years ago: <br /> <br />January 16 <br />Hitler postpones his European invasion because of bad weather. <br /> <br />March <br />A census reports there are 13 million Americans. <br /> <br />April 1 <br />Charles Lindbergh and others urge the U.S. to stay out of the war. <br /> <br />April 9 <br />The *** invade Scandinavia. <br /> <br />June 22 <br />France capitulates to Hitler. <br /> <br />July 10 <br />The Battle of Britain begins. <br /> <br />October 29 <br />The first man is conscripted under a peacetime draft. <br /> <br />November 5 <br />Roosevelt reelected. <br /> <br />December 29-30 <br />London bombed. FDR calls the United States the "arsenal of democracy" in a fireside chat. <br /> <br />At the box office, big movies for 1940 included The Grapes of Wrath starring Henry Fonda, His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel and Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, winner of the Best Picture Oscar for 1940. <br /> <br />Popular books in 1940 included For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemmingway and Native Son by Richard Wright. <br /> <br />On US railroads, things are going good and the streamliner era is in full swing, soon to be cut off in 1941 when the US enters World War II. Railways elsewhere in the world are working hard for victory as the war progresses.
