A Canadian Pacific train derailed in Red Wing Minn. Hazardous materials was just some methanol and it wasn't leaking that much. Media is blowing it out of proportion.

From reading the news at this website one gets the impression there is a derailment almost every day. Today's at Joliet, Illinois.

There have been those in these forums that suggest an incremental improvement in speed for passenger trains is the answer. While I agree this is cheaper than building new passenger only double high speed rail lines, this railroad track has been under improvement from the state of Illinois and the Federal Railroad Administration to satisfy the slower high speed rail goals of 100 mph..... Supposely, all the way to St. Louis from Chicago.

NOT IF A FREIGHT DERAILS! Some improvement? And, oh, by the way, the Texas Eagle ran very late last year because of rail construction in Joliet..... Well, if the improved track don't last a year......maybe we would be better off with new high speed rail tracks that go much faster, say up to the TGV's 186 mph.....

First of all, not all derailments are due to track problems.

Second, if the derailment was in Joliet, it was not on any portion of the line that has been upgraded yet.

(I read some reports of the derailment, but none that told precisely where or why.)
