Fatality in Michigan

News reports this morning say a pedestrian was killed while walking on RR tracks just after midnight last night. The incident took place in Holly, Mich. north of Detroit. Reports say it was a CSX train that hit the pededtrian. No word on why the person was walking on the tracks or how you could not possibly notice a train, even if it was coming up behind you...

I can only imagine what the CSX crew is going through. I'll bet the engineer and whoever else was in the cab when this happened are not sleeping very well. I hope I never witness anything like this, although there was a time when I came close to watching three idiots get themselves killed or seriously maimed. I think my heart skipped a couple beats at the time.
The Ellis & Eastern is a shortline that runs through my community and is owned by Concrete Materials. The train was running through my neighborhood about 8 years ago with a string of cement hoppers when they stopped to throw a switch. I watched three numbskull idiots come off the bike trail and rather than wait for the train to clear the crossing, they climbed up over the couplers between the cars!! Had they fallen when the train started moving again they would have ended up with crushed arms and legs.
There are simply too many people who will never get the message that you don't tresspass on railroad property. I can hear the Ellis & Eastern coming now, I hope no one is walking the track!!

Couldn't agree more. My 6-year-old son and I love railfanning, and safety absolutely comes first. He might be the only 6-year-old around here who knows what "look, listen and live" means. He always spots engines with the Operation Lifesaver logo on it.
