Gus Dixon was one of the finest individuals I ever met. I am proud to have known him as a friend. He started his career as a porter for the Pullman Company and ended it with Amtrak as a sleeping car attendant. Despite some of the things they had to put up with, the porters were as a group a major credit to their profession, their families, their race, and their country.

My hat's off to them all.

And Gus, may you rest in peace, old friend.
