They're still out there. My cousin's been travelling by freight rail for the past two years, knows the lines better than I do! He's a relatively sober guy, too. Good guy. Been obsessed with trains since he was four. Can't get that guy to stay in one place, though...
Got a CNW tattoo. I envy him but at the same time I got a wife and kids so that keeps me happy enough.

And then there are the "recreational" hobos, the idiot kids fresh out of college who hop freight trains just for kicks.

I saw some hobos once at a Citgo gas station in Freeport, IL.They apparently hopped on a train somewhere in MIN. and were supposed to get off at La Crosse, WI but the train didn't stop(and they didn't want to jump and injur themselves and their dog) so they stayed on until the train stopped in Savanna, IL.They walked to Freeport which is about a 45 minute drive in a car so who knows how long it took them. They wanted to get to Milwaukee for a Rock consert(they had some friends in Milwaukee that could get them in for free.......by jumping the fence) so I told them they could take the CN/IC to Rockford, IL and head north after that. They knew all the lines in the whole area but didn't know about the CN/IC line through Freeport. So I assumed they hopped on the eastbound M338 the next morning and headed east.

I assumed they were taking the BNSF to La Crosse and then hop on a CP train to Milwaukee but as I said before the BNSF train flew through La Crosse.

I once saw a black & white picture in LIFE Magazine several years ago and it was a picture of a 15 year old kid who had tried to hop aboard a freight train somewhere in the south. He had lost his footing, slipped and fell underneath the wheels of the car. In the photo he was being attended to by an emergency medical technician. His legs were so badly crushed that there was no alternative but to amputate them.

YOU BET! HOPPING TRAINS IS DANGEROUS, AND IT IS CERTAINLY NOT WORTH RISKING YOUR OWN PERSONAL SAFETY!!!!!
