The Dawin Awards should just go ahead and devote an entire category to railraod crossing idots because I have yet to get people to understand the simple dangers of trains. I can't seem to understand what they are missing.... what part of "trains can't stop" don't peopleget.[:(!]

Idiot. Doesnt he know that there is ALREADY an awerness Program, a National one at that.

Why would you expect him to know this? For crying out loud, the guy doesn't read newspapers or watch news on TV. It amazes me that he would admit to such ignorance, but, sadly, he has. The pres relies on his flunkies to tell him what is going on in the world and our own country. His aides had to beg him to watch to news to see how bad Katrina was. Truly a scary situation.

When we lived in a German small town, (hubby was active duty Air Force) their was a 2 track system that split the town through the middle. Their gates were really massive, not just a piece of lumber with a few lights on them. It had a fence like structure under it. The fences were on both sides, all the way through the town, one end to the other, maybe further. It all looked very sturdy. There was a small 2 story building that a RR employee sat and controlled the gates, and really watched everyone coming up to the tracks, as this was the way not only to drive out of town, but to walk to the market, shopping, etc. This gate was down a good 5-10 minutes before you saw the train. And the train travelled very fast! We didn't see the train until it was right there, because it had a left turn to make. It actually didn't seem to slow down for this turn. And as many people know, these local type trains are always on time in Germany. Before the gates would go up, I think another 5 minutes would pass. Believe me, waiting for these trains to go through took lots of time, and patience for us American types. The wait was worth it once, when a Bullitt like train came through the town! The towns people must have had some information about this train coming though that I didn't know of. We had a lot of people waiting at the crossing, more than usural. I am glad my kids saw that one!

In my home town one of our local funeral homes had a billboard campaign aimed at drug abuse, "Keep taking meth and we will provide your last ride" or something to that effect, and the add included an oak casket decked out in flowers.

Maybe we should have something like this at a lot of railroad crossings.
