I am sticking with this story. If anyone take's offence to this, please forgive me. This incident took place in March of 1994. It did not take place at a Intermodul Yard. It was a switching yard. Afterward the Yardmaster required the railroad police to check into the office before the dogs were brought on to the property so it could be announced over the radio.

mr. tim, im with you.. i say, no harm, no foul.. its a story, not a morality tale.. of course, r.r. is dangerous work; and so is being confronted by a guard-dog who is trained to pursue or even bite, but jeez, guys, lighten up a little! a man who falls on a banana peel doesn't think its funny, either, but people laugh, right? he could break his back, strike his head, become unconscious and ride to the e.r., but that's not the point.. the point is, seeing a man slip on a banana peel is funny! and so is the thought of a crew being chased from their
train by a guard dog released by a policeman sent to rid the yard of looters..
c'mon, even undertakers find humor in their work, as do paramedics, policeman and those fighting cancer..jeez!

Speeking of jokes and dogs.... I live in TN where we have lots of one (jokes..I mean cops..no wait, I mean jokes..same thing these days) and one less of the other (dogs). If you ever want to travel out of town and get rid of your family pet, money, peace of mind, etc. just bring em' on down to Tennessee and the cops will gladly put the lead to em'.
Being a resident and feeling the black eye here , I just couldn't resist. Don't hate me because I'm sarcastic. :)

Hi Tim,
How well do you know your source? Dont misunderstand, I see the humor in thr dogs chasing the guys they were sent to protect, but...were they guard dogs, or poice dogs?. There is a diffrence. Anyone who releases guard dogs is being foolish, and they are often not trained to tell the diffrence between perp or civilian. So turning a pack of them lose anywhere is dangerous, to say the least. I know a few cops, one is a dog handler, K9 unit. The dog, Bert, is more than his dog, its almost as if he is human. His handler would never turn him lose to run free, Bert is trained to follow commands, so his partner always keeps him in sight, he wouldnt risk bert being shot or hurt with out being there as back up to the dog. And Bert wouldnt chase anyone he came upon, he isnt trained for that, he will only pursue and attack on command from his partner, so turning police dogs lose in a yard wouldnt make any sense unless the handlers were with the dogs. And belive me, my friend never goes anywhere with out bert, his wife says he would let the dog sleep in their bed if she allowed him to. But, people make funng decisions, so it may be a true story.
Funny story either way.....
Stay frosty

Tim, I took no offense, but neither is there slapstick comedy here. The individuals with whom officers must deal are not all rail enthusiasts following their interest.
Regards and have a safe day. gdc
