The SP had a small yard plus a locomotive facility to serve the industry and branchline diesel switchers. The common locomotives were SD-9s on through freights, PAs on the passenger trains and Baldwins on the locals. The SP&S served town with a daily freight that usually operated at night.

Nowadays-Crozet, VA on the Buckingham Branch. The railroad is just across the field in the back of our house. Each day there will be a BB local between Staunton and Charlottesville. Daily CSXT will move a half dozen empty eastbound unit trains pulling open hoppers for coal, covered hoppers for feed and tank cars for sulphur up to Rockfish Gap to cross the Blue Ridge and then on to Clifton Forge, VA. In addition the Cardinal goes through tri-weekly in each direction with an occasional private car for White Sulphur Springs or the New River Gorge.

PA's ? As in SP daylight colors? Or you saying PA's on the SP&S? And-what kind of Baldwins? Almost sounds like diesel locomotive heaven to me.[:)]

...Pulled off the interstate some years ago traveling down through that area and pulled into the White Sulphur Springs Amtrak station just to look around...A neat location for a railfan....Nice and intersting mountainous area.

Sorry what I have two examples:
Heydays : Western Tennessee, Jackson to be specific, We used to have the old GM&O yard downtown, then it became ICG they ran alot of trains through there.
Then NS bought it and Now there are none.
The old T&P line out of Ft Worth west. The T&P ran alot of trains before MP ran them dry. After the UP/MP merger (late 80's early 90's) it was down to one through freight MFWEP and the local.
Now: It's as busy as it once was with T&P with intermodal, autoracks, and manifests. UP has rerailed, retied, and resignaled most of the RR out here. Where track speeds were at 30 MPH now they are at 70!

Zapp: Is all the traffic now UP? or is the T&P still running through Ft. Worth?

No more T&P,it's all UP Murph!

As I recall, the SP was in the process or repainting their PAs from the Daylight to Scarlet/Grey paint scheme but someone knowing more about SP paint schemes will probable have a better fix when the repainting started. The Baldwins were S-12s working in the yard. On the branches we had GE 70 tonners that had recently replaced the 4-8-0s.

The only thing I recall seeing on the SP&S were FAs on the freight train to Eugene.

Other than daylight colors, I don't remember seeing any pictures of PA's in SP colors. Either way, they would be a sight to see.[:)]
