Fiscal Funding for Amtrak...?
Posted by Modelcar on Saturday, September 28, 2002 9:09 PM
Yesterday I read the House of Representives have voted 700 plus million on funding for Amtrak for the new Fiscal year...and it is much less than David Gunn indicated he critically needed to put it back on track....A Republican leader indicated he did not want to reward incompetent leadership [since removed]...What a lame excuse. The Senate voted the requested 1.2 Billion and now I suppose it goes to a Conference to be resolved.

And at the same time the airlines have their tin cups out too. One wonders whether when it is all over if Greyhound will be the only entity left.

...Could be, as Studebaker is out of business so we probably don't have any covered wagon builders left to help with the transportation needs.

While the House is still set on $700 million plus, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson killed the $200 line to make or break a train. Don't Mess With Texas, the second largest state in population will not set idly by and let both of it trains vanish without a fight. If only Amtrak provided much better service in Texas, getting to San Antonio in the wee hours of the morning is not service!

I believe she has supported Amtrak efforts where it made sense in the past...

I wouldn't even bet on Greyhound. They're in Chap 11...... "Free" right of way and even they can't make money hauling people.
