Honestly, I would love to hear some more opinions. The smilies are graphical emoticons. Emoticons are used as an aid to help convey the feelings of the user. When people are involved in a conversation, body language, tone and facial expressions play an important role in conveying the feelings and attitudes of people. However being online we lose that aspect of our conversations. People use emoticons to help make up for that loss. Personally I would rather put up with any abuse of smilies than have a misunderstanding of someone's message. With that said, maybe...(not promising)...there will be a way to allow individual members to "disable" them.
