An old post but here's some info. First off don't let media hype but the paranoia into you. Memphis, like all major cities, has its bad parts of town. If one goes into any new area unaware than shame on them.

Anyway, the prime spot in Memphis would have to be Kansas Street off Carolina. This point begins a six track stretch into town (E to W) for four railroads (UP,BNSF,CSX & NS) known as Broadway with CSX & NS beginning/ending here and UP & BNSF coming in from the west. CN also has a single track crossing here N to S.

UP and BNSF cross into Memphis here from the west over the Mississippi River on the Harahan Bridge (UP double track) and Frisco Bridge (BNSF single track). 60+ trains a day through this part of town.

A few examples:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=60599
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=59247
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=55623
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=46999
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=38086

M.J.
