My suggestion would be if possible to use Deerfield Beach or Ft. Lauderdale rather then Miami/Miami. [:D][:D]

The only good thing there is South Beach (actually Miami Beach) . However be prepared for nudity on the beach, Boy to boy lovers & girl to girl lovers. Besides that like going to South Beach is like going to Venice CA. Girls in bikinis rollar skating on bikes, music on the streets etc, etc. If you coming come before end April as May begins the rainy season + hot humid weather everyday. The real place you will want to get to is the Shark Valley entrance to the Everglades west of Miami. You will be walking with the alligators. Their is a tower they take you to where you will get super views. Miami has such tourist things as the Parrot & Monkey jungles. Sea World, the zoo, viz caya ( a mansion). In Miami there is little Havana & little Haiti[:D]

Oh, Brother!!!!!!! Oh, the stereotype fears!

Guys, I have family in Miami and go every year! Plenty of rail action down there.

Recently my elderly mother rode the Silver Star from Miami, by herself and enjoyed herself. She wasn't mugged, jumped on, pan handled or accosted at the station.

The neighborhood is near an industrial area and yes just a few blocks to the east is a lowe-middle income area with a huge flea market and lots of stores.

The neat thing about the Miami station is that it is directly below the Metro rail line station. About 200 yards north of the station is the Amtrak servicing facility. For patient railfans, the Miami station has plenty of photo ops!

Just across the tracks (west) from the Amtrak station is the TRI-Rail commuter station. This station is clean and very architecturally attractive. On Tri-Rail, you'll see F40PH's pulling double decker commuter cars. This station also has an escalator that takes you dirctly up to the Metro Rail station. Talk about connections!

When you have a chance, catch the Metro Rail to Governor's Square. Go downstairs one level, and transfer onto the People Mover. It runs in a circle inside Downtown Miami. Enjoyable ride and cool views of the skyline and at one point, the bay.

IMHO, Miami has the best "balanced" transit system in all of Florida.

Check out "Bayside", right on the edge of the water in downtown. Atractive and clean. Food court, shops, and live music. There is a Hardrock Cafe also. Great place to stroll and relax. You'll also have a view of the cruise ships coming in and out of the harbor. Don't blow money in the shops as some, IMHO, are tourist traps.

You can also check out, Coconut Grove. Also an attractive, "clean" area near the water with restaruants, music, and shops.

I forgot the name, but there is an impressive railroad museum on the west side of town. near Flagler St. About a 20 minute ride from downtown.

Go to your search engine and type in: railroad museums in America. Check it out to find the one in Miami.

Yes, like any U.S city there are some littered slum areas and the criminal element. Funny thing is that the place to really worry about purse snatchers and robbers is at the ritzy malls! In going to any American city you have to keep your guard up, use common sense, and don't act like a tourist.

So, don't be so fearful. In getting off at the Miami station, Taxi service is available or you can have a rental car agency have a car standing by for you.

Peace out!

H"mm I live about 100 miles north of Miami. To me rail action is trains running by you at 70/80 MPH maybe 1 to 2 miles long. All I know of in a area is a occasional CSX train that rides up the tracks used by Tri-rail. The other guy is the FEC & I used to have offices alongside their track & maybe max was 30 MPH. Also they only had several trains a day. CSX are even more spotty. Just to give you a idea last year I was in a place in South Chicago & in a about 6 hours saw 25 trains in about 6 hours.[:o)]

Also what did a sterotype? I just told him more or less what there is down their to do. What did I say that was improper? [:(]

My apologies SPbed,

You didn't say anything bad, but .

Just your reply about getting off at Deerfield Beach or Lauderdale, can leave one with the impression that the Miami station is a bad place to be, when it actually isn't so horrid.

In general summer time rates are far cheaper then winter rates. I do not though the policies of the major hotels in Miami/Miami Beach concerning pricing. As a example in the summer you can play 18 holes of golf including the cart for $25.00 per person per round. In the winter that same course would be charging over $100.00 per person per round including the cart. [:D][:)]
