X996 AMTRAK
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 16, 2002 2:31 PM
Hello from France,
I'm desperately looking for pictures and infos about Amtrak X996. Behind this number was one of the most beautiful and powerful french locomotive, the CC 21003 (four units built, 5900 KW, dual mode 1,5 kv/25kv-50hz), and in 1977 she was sent highly modified to the USA and tested on Amtrak lines before being sent back without order in late 1977. She is still working under her new name CC 6577, she has ran about 4 millions of kilometers and she's now a single 1,5 Kv locomotive. Many thanks if you can send me pictures of her american journey !

There is a picture of the X996 on the railfan.net forum. Just copy and paste this link:

A few years ago, I saw a picture of it in a British magazine (go figure: a French locomotive in an English magazine).

That railfan.net picture looks like it was taken right after the loco got back to Europe - Amtrak livery plus US coupler, but look at the steamer down the track to the left!

It's not a steamer....it's a small diesel switcher (shunter). This basic type is common throughout Western Europe, albeit under different classifications....
