Basalt does break down, as the talus slopes along the Columbia River near Beverly (a few miles from the Boylston tunnel) can attest. <br /> <br />I have been through the GN Mansfield branch tunnel as well, back in 1985. It collapsed 2 years ago. <br /> <br />as was the one on the GN Mansfield branch also in basalt, which I have both walked and rode through.
