I think grade crossing protection with detection systems and PTC is only suitable for vehicles stuck on the tracks. You can't stop a train for every truck crossing the tracks before the gates close but within the train's stopping distance.</p> <p>You can't protect people that try to beat the train, as pedestrians or in a vehicle.</p> <p>As mandated PTC was not required to avoid collisions under restricted speed. Designed differently as stand-alone system, but within the mandate, PTC could have been calibrated to avoid this collision.<br />Regards, Volker</p>
