DT&I blue units

shortly after the Grand Trunk western bought the DT&I railroad in 1983 most if not all units where quckly renumbered, a few units where painted in standard GTW blue and orange but had DT&I lettering on the side. whats the point of that if GTW alredy owned the unit? They also had a GTW number at the time as well. here is a link to a photo

Depends on who actually owned the unit. Many locos are not technically owned by the railroad but by a bank or holding company. Older equipment had trust plates attached telling who the real owner was. There are a lot of legal hoops to jump through and thses locos may have needed painting during that time. The reason for the immediate renumbering is the maintainance records are kept on computer and you can't have 2 units with the same number.

I vaguely remember some sort of paper shuffle involved with why they did that the way they did... But those modern DTI logos sure were nice.
