Nate, they are pretty much the same animals, but with a few internal changes. The most noticeable external change relates to a revised oil cooler. The dash 7's have a wider hood just ahead of the radiator section. This is caused by the "tilting" of the oil cooler to facilitate better draining of the prime mover, should it go dead in winter weather conditions. That was a problem with the earlier U-series units. Later on, when the microprocessor Dash 8's came along, the Dash 7's were rendered obsolete as well. Funny thing, in MY opinion, I think the GE's were always a better locomotive, but the resale value is a lot lower than a similar EMD unit. I think that "parts availibilty" has something to do with it. <br /> Todd C.
