Walking along a bike path today, I saw a train that had to be a stray. It had just about every kind of car but a caboose. Trains like this are rare in the land of unit trains of grain, ethanol and pink rocks.
Third engine was a CSX. I've never seen one of those here before. What followed was a mixture of grain hoppers, ethanol tank cars, lumber cars and boxcars. Interspersed among them were tank cars of liquified petroleum gas and sodium hydroxide, big cube boxcars and for some reason, 6 cars of cars. I was musing that there were no auto racks when a single CN auto rack popped around the corner.
I can only guess this train was rerouted. BNSF northbound trains usually go Omaha to Minneapolis by way of Sioux City > Garretson SD. This one took a side route of Sioux City > Sioux Falls > Garretson. How do railroads pay for using each other's tracks? This train for example, spent some miles on the D&I Railroad.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
There is/was an arrangement known as the National Detour Agreement to which most railroads are a party. This covers various issues such as liability, who is responsible for which expenses, etc.
Well the Yul Brynner part certainly caught my eye!
This probably belongs on the "Classic Toy Trains" Forum but did you know Yul was a toy train fan? In his case it was American Flyer products.
IIRC, during the filming of "The King and I", Yul Brynner posed for a photo with a small American Flyer train layout that was on-set to entertain the kids in the movie between takes. There's no evidence he was ever a model railroader or toy train collector. Lionel and AF often got celebrities to pose with their products who otherwise had no connection to trains.
One night in Garretson and the tough guys crumble?

I don't know, I got my information from a "Classic Toy Trains" article on celebrity toy train fans and Yul Brynner was one of the ones they mentioned. I'm assuming they got their facts right. I don't work for CTT as a fact-checker.

In Ron Hollander's "All Aboard!", an excellent history of Lionel, he has a page in the "Between Stations" section (between chapter 4 and 5) called "Famous Fans". He lists some people who were known to own Lionel trains (Frank Sinatra, Paul Whiteman, Gene Autry etc.) and featured photos of celebrities posing with toy trains, like when visiting the Lionel showroom, or donating trains to a children's hospital, etc. One photo shows Yul Brynner with two children and a small American Flyer layout, with the caption "Yul Brynner takes break from The King and I to enjoy American Flyers".
I am pretty sure Classic Toy Trains included him based on that photo, but I have never seen any other reference to him actually owning or collecting any type of model or toy trains. The popularity of Hollander's book is made clear every time this subject come up, since at least one or two of the people shown posing with trains (like Secy of State John Foster Dulles) are brought up as being model railroaders, despite their being no evidence that they ever did more than pose for a photo.
Would see those manifest frieghts on CSX and Ns over here.Call them "Carl Shaver" specials. He would be out filling his notebook.Miss him plenty.
