NittanyLionI read it as shifting that repack from happening at US distribution centers to moving entire store-tailored boxes stuffed in China (or whatever place). Although I wouldn't agree it would be a good idea.
IIRC it takes about a month for the ship to cross the Pacific. That would be an extra month that a store would have to guess what to order to stock their store. It seems the advantage would be a domestic DC. Also, I wonder if China factories send containers direct to ships, or if they too go thru warehouses before export?

Just like 'loose car' railroading is a aggregating business in getting enough car loads going to the 'same' place or places to warrant operating a train. Ocean carriers, especially those involved in 'liner service' between multiple ports on both sides of their respective ponds are aggregating carriers - getting enough boxes going to a desiganted port to financially justify making that port call.
I can't think of a 'big box' store than can handle all the product that a 53 foot trailer/container is able to hold. Distribution Centers, and the stores they supply, probably get 10/15/25 trailer/containers of big cube 'hot products' to distribute to their stores.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!

The 53' trailers I see around here from a certain "big box" chain appear to be making multiple drops at the various locations.
