In the video clip, the fire chief said the vehicle was struck "near the station" and was dragged a distance before disengaging from the train.

I don't think the Amtrak engineer could have done anything to avoid. It could have been worse.

Which is not a unusual happening in train v car collisions.
If, indeed, the vehicle came off the bridge, it wouldn't be the first time. Seems like something similar happened in Texas a while back.

The approach to the crossing is a gravel road with lights, but no gates. I've been across it many times.
Lake States Railroad operates the former CSX line now. When I've been there, their trains aren't running all that fast.
