Good Railroad Podcasts?
Posted by CopCarSS on Monday, February 7, 2022 10:19 AM

Hello, fellow Trains fora denizens.

Recently, my commute to work has more than doubled so I've been trying to fill the trips with some podcasts to listen to in the background. Most have been photography related but I'm also looking to add some good railroad discussion. I listened to the whole of the (now defunct?) Trains Magazine podcast with both news and some nice segments with Brian Solomon. Sadly, there hasn't been a new episode since May of 2020.

Do any of you have any railroad themed podcasts that you especially like? Ideally, I'd like something that covers recent news and happenings but other subjects like history and technical information are also welcome.

Thanks for any help!

I don't know about podcasts but....

I've been watching a series of youtube interviews called 'Spirit of the Railroaders'. They are interviews with railroad legends like Robert Krebs, Hays Watkins, Richard Davidson, ect. talking about their railroad and personal historys. Some of these are quite long, 1-3 hours. Fascinating stuff. Anyone that liked Rush Loving jrs book The Men Who Loved Railroads would dig these videos.

I like listening to Railway Age's Podcast. It's called Rail Group On Air. You can listen via Soundcloud.

You may want to consider the "Moving America" podcast. This podcast is hosted by two actual Class 1 railroaders (conductor and engineer, I think). It only comes out every other week, but is fairly entertaining given that this is only a part time gig for them. I sometimes wonder how they find the time to do all the prep and recording given how crazy their schedules must get sometimes. Anyway, worth a listen. They also have a website: https://movingamericapodcast.com

P.S. - They also have a "Fan Photo Friday", and pick someones submitted photo to be featured on the website and on the youtube version of the podcast.

"The Roundhouse" is a very good preservation one.

My favourite podcast at the moment is "Well There's Your Problem", a podcast about engineering disasters with slides which is itself a disaster (that's their slogan).  It's half comedic and not always about trains but the hosts are all longtime railfans and I've yet to find a bad episode.

Update: I found in spotify a playlist of Railroad poscasts!! Never thought I'd see this but yeah, it's a playlist so it's a very intersting mix of podcasts. I barely listened to the first one and so far looks promising. It's called "Freight RailRoads Podcasts" or here's the direct link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7qGzpp9E8dPy2J7pmE3PmY?si=d9a9fc056a9245ea

Also found this podcast about model railroad. Probably will check it out later:
