10 and 100 series trains are freights and auto trains, 20 and 200 series trains are intermodal's and RoadRailers, 30 and 300 series trains are freights, 500, 600, 700, and 800 series trains are mineral (usually coal) trains. <br /> <br />I've heard the last letter in 10, 20, 30, 50, 60, 70, and 80 series trains (IE 19G) doesn't stand for anything, NS used them because they ran out of #'s in the 100, 200, 300, 500, 600, 700, and 800 series trains, the 40 and 400 series was retired last year and all of those trains were moved to the 30 and 300 series.
