Number Of Trains On The NS Lurgan Branch
Posted by caldreamer on Friday, May 22, 2020 12:46 PM

I live near the NS Lurgan branch which runs from Hagerstorn, MD to Harrisburg, PA where it connects with the NS east/west main line from Philadelphia to Chicago and the mainline to Buffalo, NY.  It is a pretty active line and I was wondering if anyone knew about how many trains a day run on this branch.

    Thanks In Advance

There are about 14 regular road freights, 4 manifests and 10 intermodals. Not every intermodal runs 7 days a week and traffic dips starting Sunday - Tuesday. Monday tends to be a great MOW day since gangs can get more time to work.

Added to this are some locals working out of Greencastle yard and one out of Shiremanstown yard. CSX runs 1 trackage rights local from Hagarstown to Shippensburg to access the stranded east end of CSX's Lugran Sub

From time to time there are utility coal trains and empties (but less so in the last few months)  as well infrequent grain trains and their empties

Thank you.  I live three blocks from the line and see them running quite frequently.  It is a good place to railfan since there is a street  right next to the tracks and you get a good view of the trains.

The Lurgan line usually has intermodals coming out of rutherford on the reading line, so the cycle goes: New york, allentown, Rutherford/harrisburg, Hagerstown, roanoke, and then it goes to the south, in harrisburg other traffic coming from enola can come in. The lurgan line can get some intersting power, like friday it got 4002 and 8099 on the head on an intermodal, i went up there and caught it, it was real nice. If you set up there during the day you will probably see 2 plus trains (NS 201 and 202 and fairly prevalent around 12:00-5:00)
