Whatever Happened to Fred Frailey?

Whatever happened to Fred Frailey? It's been almost seven months since his last blog. Could he have been locked on the Canadian when they parked it?

      I hope that Fred has RETIRED IN GOOD HEALTH! Whistling One of the Newswire posters had commented it had been 6 months since Fred Frailey had posted a  item. 

     I got to looking and his last piece was in the October 2019 issue.  I make that 8 months. I had not seen anything with is by-line; like many railfans, waiting is part of the process. Like waiting for C&O 1369 to 'steam again'. You know its going to happen, so you wait patiently. 

   I went back through the last 8 issues, just to make sure I had not missed Fred's contribution.  I guess I'll just agree with Beaulieu's comment above.  

   Sure wish someone had mentioned his leaving; for whatever reason. Sigh

If you are waiting for the 1369 to steam - it will be a long, long time - it has to be designed and built first! Oops - Sign  Dyslexic fingers get me too.  1309 has been a long time too.

       You are right, of course.... Had read about 10 back issues of TRAINS looking for Fred's by line...

If I remember correctly Mr. Fred DID do a "Hail and Farewell!" column for "Trains" when he pulled the plug.  Maybe you folks missed it?  Or maybe I'm imagining it?

I know I saw something  about his retiring.

As I recall, his fare thee well was barely a paragraph at the end of one of his regular columns or blogs.  

When I read it, I couldn't help the feeling it was added as an afterthought and the decision wasn't mutual.  YMMV

BTW, he has a new book out. The blurb I saw made me want to read it.

It's at least odd that almost all of the non-staff contributors disappeared in a very short period of time.    My purely W.A.G. is that Kalmbach would not or could not pay them for their work any longer.

I bought Fred's new book, Last Train to Texas, right after it was published and enjoyed this great collection of his favorite columns he had written over the years. Hopefully, Fred will return with some more great stories from his many illustrious years covering the railroad industry, the trains and personalities involved. In any event, we do miss him.

i had the same impression when Don Phillips left TRAINS.
