Does anybody know the story behind this interesting mysterious tunnel in Union Interlock at Rahway NJ?
Looks to me like 'manway' access to the adjacent duckunder; this was once perhaps the most heavily trafficked main-line segment in the world. I see no evidence of its continuing to the 'opposite' side, though, as I'd expect for, say, an abandoned commuter station tunnel.
Its proportions and shape, and its immediate adjacency to a parking lot, indicate it is likely not drainage.
Was the manway access to the duckunder track for mantemainte crews, and or did it connect to the other side? I wonder if it is still in use. If it is it may be for maintenance crews only.
