website issues??
Posted by LOUIS J HARRIS on Thursday, April 11, 2019 1:40 PM

My browsers (Chrome and Safari) are now saying this website is Not Secure? Also, it's taking a long time for anything to load. Trains may need to update their website??

Not aware of the "Not Secure" issue — I will forward that information to our IT people — but we have been having website issues all day, which seem to be improved if not fully solved. We apologize for the problems.

We will be rolling out an improved content management program later this year which we hope will solve most if not all of our current website issues. We have frankly outgrown the current system, but didn't want to introduce the new program right in the midst of our Big Boy coverage, which was the original timeframe.

As far as I know the website's been "not secure" ever since I've been on it, nor have I ever seen an "s" in the "http" heading indicating it's secure, as in "https."

That's been a minor concern, not every website is "https."  I had website issues this morning as well, slow loading, no loading, Google couldn't find the site at all at one point.  It seems to be behaving itself now.

As a check, if I have problems with the Kalmbach 'sites I'll go to others and see what happens.  If they pop up with no issues at least I know the problem's not on my end.

Incidentally, I noticed the Kalmbach problems rising about 10:30-11:00 last night.

There's been a formal change to require "https" protocol for all normal Internet traffic.  It's one reason current browsers for certain older operating systems are no longer in development.  I'm expecting any new system from Kalmbach to be compliant with this.  A little research will reveal the security issues leading to the requirement.

Mind you, I'm not particularly concerned about Russian or Chinese hackers on this website.  Unless they're railfans I doubt they'd find much of interest to them here.

They wouldn't have to hack anyway, just come on in!  The more the merrier!

My Kalmbach sites (this forum, the Newswire, and the Rochelle Webcam) were taking forever to load this morning.  All seems to be resolved now.

It is not that some foreign (or domestic) "spy" would hack the web site to read the silliness we write, but that too many people have ONE password for all the sites they frequent and the "hacker" could manage to break into this site, read the files that store user info and obtain the user ID's and passwords, that might be the same for bank accounts, credit cards, credit info, and other personal info that would allow them to steal the identity of members here.

Then when they are caught, they will admit that they got their info from Kalmbach servers.  And everybody here would blame Kalmbach for their losses... or worse, they'd be just as evil as the hackers and claim they had losses that they didn't really have.

Which is why I NEVER do anything sensitive like banking on-line, I get my butt to the bank and do it there.

We had a saying in the Marines as far as communications are concerned...

"NEVER put ANYTHING out over the electromagnetic spectrum you don't want someone to hear!"

I've lived by that advice for forty years, it's served me well.

You'd be surprised at how many veterans in my age bracket follow the same rule.

This computer of mine's just for fun.  Better safe than sorry.

Not a fan of automatic electronic bill payment.  The only organizations that have access to my checking account are those organizations that put funds into it.

Automatic payments go to one of my credit cards - the credit cards DO NOT have access to the checking account.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
