There's a thread over on the "Classic Trains" Forum called "Erie Canal-Clinchfield Boxcar" you may want to have a look at, being an up-state New Yorker. Kind of a mystery location, maybe YOU can tell us where it is?
Great railroading in upstate New York. Lived up in Schenectady NY. Kept my boat on the Barge canal. Nothing better than trains and cruising the canal I my 34' searay.

I took a look at that image. Judging by the shadows, it was taken from the north side of the canal, and it looks like the river is behind it. I couldn't find a spot that looked like that on the satellite images, though.
