Old Freight rate map
Posted by Illinois Central guy on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 10:14 AM

I have a Freight Rate map, but am unable to find a copyright date. Some of the lines listed are the Chicago and Alton, Green Bay and Western, Pere Marquette and others. The map has the following listed in the upper left hand corner:

Offical Map of Percentage Groups

Central Freight Assn. Territory

Illinois and Mississippi River Points

For Eastbound Freight Rates.

It was copyrighted by Eugene Morris of Chicago for the International Correspondence Schools of Scraton PA.

I was trying to get some idea of the age of this map. I got it at an Estate sale. Any help would be appriciated.

Pre-1931

(Chicago Peoria & St. Louis RR appear on there? 1924 would be the dividing line there.... If yes, then it's before 1924)

Of the three you listed, the Chicago & Alton was gone the earliest, coming under the B&O and becoming just the Alton Railroad in 1931.

So it's at least that old, barring a carry-over of the name by an unknowing mapmaker.

Check the dates on some of the other railroads - mergers and takeovers may help narrow it further for you.

The C & A is listed. Mudchicken said that if the Chicago, Peoria & St. Louis is listed it is pre 1924. It is listed on lines South of Springfield Il.

Chicago, Peoria & St. Louis technically existed until November 1924 when it was sold off in four parts to new owners.

OK - We've narrowed it down to between 1906 and 1924.

Is it showing C&IM, C&EI RR, CH&D, Jacksonville & Havanna RR? (LE&W/NKP ? out on the fringe)

Little things like RR vs. RY may tell you volumes.
