We're getting some snow, too. We shouldn't get more than three inches or so total, so it's not as bad here as it could be.This afternoon I just hit a wall...couldn't stay awake. I will probably go to bed soon after Pat does (and she should be tired--she shoveled the driveway while I slept a bit). My latest sightings report is finally out...twenty pages of sightings of new(ish) freight cars, secondhand cars, renumbering tables, etc. This is almost all since the start of the year. I'm hoping it will be well received by my fellow carchaeologists. Still looking for that elusive first freight car of the new year!

Johnny: We weren't trying to corner the market on snow. More coming today that will hit Raton Pass, Trinidad and La Junta and miss Denver. The people who did not shovel yesterday are paying for it now. (16 degrees now and thick sheets of ice anywhere the snow melted and the snow on the ground has a thick crust.) The people who did not shovel and those who shovelled driveways and not walks are probably looking at citations from the busybodies from the homeowners association. One neighbor did not understand why I shovel out the street gutters with our monoslab walk/curb/gutter. I think she figured it out by now. (no water running down the sidewalk on its way to the drop inlet here that froze overnite at 15 degrees)....Don't think the plows ever made it off the primary streets. They were closing parts of the local belt freeway last night because of the snowmelt turning the pavement into skating rinks in construction zones.There was a claim that some cars slid 150-200 feet off the road.
Paul from Covington: Thanx for sharing. Don't dry-out too much, those three or four feet deep cracks in drought dry soil in your backyard aren't fun either.
Carl's estimate of three inches seems right on the mark for our area, too. Shoveled twice on Saturday afternoon and evening and once on Sunday morning. It is some extra work but it's easier than trying to clear it in one shot. The sun came out on Sunday afternoon and the shoveled areas were cleared to bare sidewalk courtesy of some melting.
Friday evening was a bad ride home. There was a small derailment near 47th Street, resulting in a detour through NS 55th Street yard which involved a back-up movement (no problem for push-pulls). I was about an hour late getting home. I heard this morning that some trains ran up to two hours late.
Pat did our driveway on Saturday evening, because she wanted the exercise. It snowed after she shoveled, but the sun took care of that while we were in church and out to dinner. When we got home, I did the patio and driveway apron, and Pat did the sidewalk. It's all clear and dry now, until the next snow later this week. It still looks pretty out there.Sad news for us: we'll have to ensure that our neighbor's walk is clear as well, for the foreseeable future, too...she passed away about a week ago.I still have to write the letter to go with the reports; it will be quite a package for my Oregon correspondent when it's all put together. Maybe I'll get out on foot and mail it later today.

Bought a new snowblower after my sister aggravated something in her shoulder shoveling the storm after Thanksgiving, and we haven't had more than a dusting of snow at the house since. Strange winter..........

Carl: Understand the shovelling duty. Had something like that here for six years. For a brief while it was both sides until the new neighbor actually got here. Now we have something of a shovel brigade social club.

We have our share of mispronouncable names here. Madrid (MAD' drid) is a regular. Chaumont isn't a problem if you're familiar with France (Sha MOH). A street in Watertown is GO tham, not GA tham. Some of the native American names can be a challenge, too.

Learned how to pronounce Versailles, KY on a business trip to Lexington. Up here, the county is pronounced "Kay-YOU-ga." Sometimes the first sylable is more like "eye" than a long "a," though.

According to our usual meteorologist, there are two storms headed our way. The first will skirt us close to the south...Paul, you might get something, but we don't expect to. But there's another one coming Friday that's going to be dumping on us all day Saturday, probably to the tune of six inches or so. And more will be coming the following week. I'll get my shoveling time in, after all.So tomorrow, in honor of the storm we aren't getting, I plan on sauntering to Elmhurst for some data-gathering. I want to get that first 2019-built car sooner rather than later.
Forgot to post this. This past weekend a north bound CSX IM train on the A&WP sub south of Atlanta. Thought nothing unusual about the 2 CSX locos on the front running about run 6. Was I ever wrong as 3/4 way back was a CSX DPU pushing hard at probably what was run 8. First DPU operation observed on this sub! Most CSX IM trains with any load usually observed with 3 locos in front all working fairly hard at the start of a 14 mile climb. So will be watching for more 2x1x0 or even the ultimate 1x1x1 DPU set up!

Ns had some cars uptown after work.Went into town to run errands and go to the store.The shovel sales were brisk.Tonights snow is mostly melting as it comes down.Guessers say 6-9 inches for Saturday plus gusty winds.stay tuned.
Ns local was uptown when I left work.Ran some errands.We are about as ready as we can for whatever Mother Nature wants to send.Chores to do.
We didn't get upgraded to a "warning" like much of the rest of the state. Still might see a foot of snow before it's over and done.
We got about five or six inches of the stuff that we'd received the warning for. There are currently no advisories for us, though we may see a bit of lake-effect snow overnight and into tomorrow. Cook County (Chicago) is under a winter weather advisory, and I trust I won't need to go into Indiana tomorrow. No trains seen today; my phone gave me a mile of walking credit for my work at shoveling snow today (and walking the aisles of the store after we got out).I also received in the mail a new book to edit--same author as usual; the topic's slightly different, though...DT&I MofW equipment.
Matt's didn't have to do dishes tonight but he helped me shovel snow.He also got the main line running on the layout.He can run Dcc and regular Dc locomotives on the main.The yard is DC.Csx and other railroads were having usual weather problems.Going to get brrr cold for tomorrow and Monday.Church has already cancelled so we can stay home and keep warm.
Snowboard is only showing an inch of snow since afternoon, but there's drifting going on, too. Northeast wind means I get a nice diamond shaped drift right in front of the garage door.
The big story is still the wind chill, currently coming in at -23F.
Next wave ... Chicken Little move over. The local media are now warning of up to a foot of wet white stuff...up from 0"-2" yesterday. Weatherliar U may be putting up a recall notice on the current graduating class.
