Actually a smart move by the UP. The Bush funeral train was perhaps the biggest U.S. railroad moment of 2018 - it was also the first presidential funeral train since Eisenhower's in 1969. I'm sure more Americans are curious to see this locomotive with their own eyes since it was put into the national spotlight earlier this month. Also, it will generate some attraction again once it is finally retired at the GHWB Presidential Museum.

The locomotive had been held, under tarp for secure storage, at North Little Rock for many years. Periodically shop forces would take the tarp off, work on the unit, then cover it back up.
Reading the 2/19 coverage on pages 6 &7 of the funeral train, one sentence on 7 caught my attention. As for the operating crew that worked the job that day, it stated UP 'picked' the operating crew members. The carrier does not have any control who workes a job. Assignments are bid/bump seniority, first-in,first-out. If this is correct, then the first out condr & engr would be able to submit a timeslip of board mishandling. Not a good feel to have been first out on that board and incorrectly not get called for it.

Don't know the specifics of UP local agreements, however, UP, CSX and all the other Class 1 carriers are signatory to the National Agreement and carrier selected crews can be done for special movements.
Not a good optic for an Engineer or Conductor making their 1st day in craft to be handling such a assignment. If individuals feel that their senioity rights have been impaired by the company selecting specific crew members they can file a claim through the normal claim channels.
