Army Navy Game Train
Posted by GREGORY FRATIANNI on Thursday, December 6, 2018 11:28 AM

Does anybody know if there will be a special Army-Navy game train from West Point to Philadelphia for the 2018 game on Saturday, Dec. 8? I know there was one a few years ago because I saw a photo after it ran. It ran on the CSX River Division (former NYC West Shore) from West point to New Jersey and then on the NE corridor. I live near Congers, NY and am hoping to see it pass through if there is one.

GO NAVY!  My nephew is a graduate of the US Naval Academy.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Private car owners created these trains in previous years and provided this free to veterans and their families, especially disabled veterans. With Amtrak changing the rules and prices I doubt they will be doing it this year, or ever again unless Amtrak makes some changes favorable to privatecar owners.

Weren't there a lot of game specials to Philadelphia from Washington and New York in the past? I seem to recall several trains laying over, all pulled by GG1s.

I tried to login to respond to a news story--and could not. I was able to post here.

I sent a note to customer support; perhaps whoever is responsible will be able to find the bug, beetle, or whatever it is and crush it.

Incidentally, I received Larry's note in my email; it has not yet come up in the forum .

Yes the Pennsy provided many trains for fans.

If what I read was correct, the Army-Navy game was one of the busiest days for the PRR in days past, in that part of the country anyway.  Quite a logistical and operating challenge to move all those passenger trains to Philly, both southbound and northbound.

And GO NAVY!  I am an old Marine after all.  We sea-service people have to stick together!

Stand Navy down the field, sails set to the sky,

We'll never change our course so Army you steer shy-y-y-y-y,

Roll up the score Na-vy, "Anchors Aweigh!",

Stand Navy down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army grey!

Ahh- football fight songs! Give this a listen, I loved this movie 50 years ago and just recently re-watched it. It stands up, especially since it obviously influenced Mad Men.

Ladies and gents, THIS  is the best football fight song of them all!

Now if you look up the definition of "Good Catholic" in the dictionary you're not going to find my picture there, but I'm still proud to know that great fight song belongs to "Holy Mother The Church!"

Final score, Army 17, Navy 10.  Oh well.

At least Navy didn't get humiliated like Michigan did by Ohio State back in November!

Anyway, found this concerning the Army-Navy game in years past which I'm sure everyone will enjoy.

You can sing this one to the tune of the Notre Dame fight song;

Cheer, cheer for old black and blue!

You're gonna win cause we are for you!

Stomp their faces in the mud,

Kick out their teeth

And draw some blood.

Stomp on their bodies,

break all their bones,

We wanna hear some screams and some moans,

If you follow our advice, we'll win a clean victory!

Yeah, it amazes me what I remember.  The problem is, WHY couldn't I remember some of the stuff I really needed to at times, instead of the useless stuff?   Bang Head   Strange how the mind works.

Great parody though!   Laugh    You know, it reminded me of something.  I had a friend in college who was a big football fan, and followed it avidly, pro ball anyway, played it in high school himself but gave it up after an injury.  After he recovered he could have rejoined the team but chose not to.  When I asked him why not know what he said?  I never forgot it.

"I just got sick of being a gladiator!"

Useless indeed! Why is it I can remember my uncle's phone number from when I was a kid- AM-4-0980 and the chassis number of the Volkswagen I sold in 1979, 4182118, the FPO zip code of my ship, the USS Guam, 09501 but I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday?

I I couldn't log in to Newswire Comments either so I sent a note to Customer Support over a week ago and received an automated response saying that I would hear something as soon as possible but I didn't hear anything so I sent a reminder and that was a couple of days ago and still haven't heard anything so don't hold your breath waiting for a response.  If they shut me off that is OK but I'd like to find that out.

I tried to log in to the Newswire again this morning--and failed again. I sent a note last week--and have heard nothing from Kalmbach.

I noticed a comment on one of this morning's items--apparently at least one subscriber is able to comment.

Just now, I had to log in to post this. For some time, I have to occasionally log in to respond to posts even though I have "Keep Me Logged In" checked.

You and I are apparently not the only ones experiencing this problem. Same thing for me. I have to log in each time I want to post but logging in to Newswire does no good. I am about to call if it goes on too much longer but I can't find the number although I haven't looked very hard. Do you have an 800 number for them?

Customer service: (877) 246-4843 or Trains@customersvc.com

It might help if you give your account number (on your address label).

The Army-Navy game traffic in Philadelphia was a rather phenominal affair every year. The Phila. Terminal Division had detailed operating plans for the date that included establishing schedules, shutting off freight traffic, spiking switches, assigning back-up personnel, et al. It was a huge undertaking back in the day when failures weren't tolerated and came off like clockwork, year after year.

Way back when - the B&O operated a number of specials for the Army-Navy game.  The B&O in concert with the Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad operated trains directly from the Naval Academy at Annapolis to Philadelphia.  The B&O would put the trains together in Baltimore, deadhead them to Annapolis for loading on the B&A, they would be operated by the B&A from Annapolis to Baltimore and then beyond by the B&O to Philadelphia.

The B&A ceased passenger operations in 1952.  The B&O ceased passenger operations beyond Baltimore in 1958.

I called Customer Support using the number you provided and was told that Trains is going through a "systems change" and that is causing the problem.  They hope to be complete by the end of the month.  For what it's worth this is the answer I was given.  Why they couldn't repond to our multiple email inquiries I didn't get into.

To err is human.  To really foul up you need a computer.

To foul up a computer you need Kalmbach IT.

I am of the opinion that it would have been an act of kindness to have posted a note on each forum with the information. I have never thought of myself as being a mushroom.

As a kid I recall our family going to Franklin Field for a football game - I think it was Navy vs. Penn.

My Grandfather had his residence at Round Bay on the Severn River - 6 miles from the Golden Dome of the Naval Academy.  My Aunt was 'coming of age' and my Grandfather went down to the Academy and got them to change the distance Middies were allowed to be from the Golden Dome from 5 to 6 miles.  Didn't work as she ended up marrying an Army Officer she met at the University of Maryland.

Thank You Mike for the articles you continue to find!

You bet, thanks Mike!  Wanswheel lives!

And I had log-in problems myself last week on the various Kalmbach forums and couldn't stay logged in once I was there.  I heard though the jungle telegraph I wasn't the only one.  I don't seem to have any problems now, I get logged in and stay logged in.  Be patient, it seems to be getting corrected.
