Seems like I recall they welded the rail back in the late 60's, but I was just a kid then. I may have seen one "splice" and thought they were welding everything in place, you know how kids are when it comes to looking for detail. <br /> <br />Most of the welds look so smooth they are barely noticable, while some , still well done, are noticeably "fatter". and have unused bolt holes through the side of the rail. <br /> <br />Since MudChicken points out that open hearth rail is "out of place" on a mainline, would it be fair to speculate N&W decided to do the upgrade to welded rail on the cheap?
