Personally, I've done the class 1 thing for six years as an engr on the CCP/IC, and can say the experience was worthwhile, but got sick and tired of the hours, being away from home in hotels, layovers, getting cut off the board, bumped to another board 100-plus miles from home, it got to be where I was starting to HATE my job, despite my railfan interest. <br /> <br />Have worked for a shortline the last 5 years and LOVE it--regular hours, weekends off and I can have a life too!! It's a tradeoff you have to decide for yourself--a little more money, but a lot more headaches.
