About 3:15 PM a UP intermodal derailed and per reports "numerous cars are overturned near Twin Peaks road. It happened in the worst monsoon storm I have experienced with approx 5 inches of rain in about an hour.
Posts on FB from friends in the Phoenix area included video showing some pretty significant winds, which begat dust storms.

Here is coverage with many photos. It says that the train was derailed by heavy rain. At one point water was over the rails.

Lots of UPS cargo scattered. Substantial law enforcement people assisting with security and traffic management.
There appear to be several dry washes there. With that much rain, they can fill up in a hurry.

Sent in the required box tops and postage to Kellogg's for a nifty looking, I think plastic?, hook and ladder fire truck in the late '50's ...I'm still waiting.
We can look forward on here to:
1. Denouncing poor media coverage, aka, shoot the messenger.
2. Fabrication of many other possible causes.
3. Denial that high water could cause such an event.
4. Exoneration of engineers and the railroad for failure to anticipate problems and exercise caution.

Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
This was the heaviest rain I have ever seen and I'm from the Southeast where heavy rain is a given. Rain here is typically very local. The nearest gage is about 4 miles away and showed 3". I have a Koi pond which overflowed with 5 " increase. They could not have had much if any warning since the whole thing lasted no more than an hour and a half. We have seen water where we have never seen it before, including the wreck site. The pace of real estate development here is ridiculous and no provision made for the increased run off. Been through my share of hurricanes and never ssaw such rain.
I have an ad blocker that is turned on and it works fine for me. Which one are you using and under what operating system?
I saw an online article that said local police were investigating some of the packages that were ripped open in the derailment that contained drugs. Imagine that you are trying to explain to the mob why your shipment of illegal drugs has gone missing. I wonder if the shipper that to insure the packages?
