Been watching the doings at Deshler - the new full flange bearing frog diamonds are in, meaning no more banging. It's really kind of weird, in a way. Most of the work is done - mainly waiting for enough traffic to cross the diamond so MOW can let trains cross at the usual 35 MPH again.

Thought 'flange bearing' frogs were designated 'One Way Low Speed' My understanding is that the lower traffic route is restricted to 10-15 MPH. I could be wrong. Mudchicken?

I questioned MC about this, too. My personal observation of the diamond last month says it's "high speed" in both directions - whatever the max speed is for those frogs. They normally run at 35 through there in both directions (EW/NS). In watching trains cross the diamond in both directions today, there is zero hammer in either direction.
At the point of intersection, the flange bearing surfaces are at the same level.
I haven't seen an OWLS diamond carry traffic on the low speed side, but I'm pretty sure you'll get at least something of a clunk there. I could be wrong.

I wonder how much welding will have to be done on the flange bearing part of the frog - or is it easily replaceable. There is nothing that does no wear.

That one is over my pay grade. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures, so I can't even speculate.
Back home, as of this morning--it should have been last nihgt, but a forest fire somewhere along the Rio Grande forced a detour across Wyoming, and we did not leave Denver until about two in the afternoon, and piddled along until we reached the UP's Denver-Chyenne line--and arrivd at Speer about five in the evening.
Except for the food service between Chicago and Boston and between Washington and Chiago, I enjoyed the trip. The conductor on the Zephyr out of Chicago mentioned the food service east of Chiago, and I asked him if he wanted to hear my opinion. Apparently he had heard quite a bit about it, for he said, "No." Hde apparently agreed with other people that it is a mistake.

Ns had an eastbound in the siding when I got off of work.Went to a meeting in Deshler.Crews were putting the tonka toys away for the day.The diamond is much better.When we left Csx was having a 3 way meet in south Deshler(D743 east siding,L241 on the main and q 350 coming into the west siding).Time for bed.
Took a charter out today. Of all groups - attendees of the state highway superintendents convention.
Great group, though - I wouldn't mind seeing them on the train again.
Pat and I encountered a couple of hungry chickens this evening--fed them salads and pasta, with a backdrop of UP and Metra. Then we crated 'em up and sent 'em back to the city. Hope they got back to the hotel before it got too dark!

I was watching the Deshler cam when someone mentioned hearing 765 on the air as it approached Liepsic, then got some reports as it approached Fostoria.
The Fostoria cam was down, so didn't get a chance to catch a glimpse.
We've got high wind advisories out here, and a small craft warning on the big lake.

As well the this year's average high in Columbus has been 10 degrees more than seasonal average with just 2 days so far below daily average. Appears nothing in sight before October. As well our lows 70 -74 with average 62 = 68.

Imagine if they'd bent that piece of hardware... Especially after they'd chopped the old diamond up into bite-sized pieces.

Well Mother nature sent a little rain but mostly wind.Had some branches to pick up when I got home.Saw a Mow truck on Ns after work.Going to get ready for the football game.Matt's cousin plays for the band across the field.Guessers say a high of 65 for tomorrow.Have the jackets ready to go.Our Pen Pal has made it to the area.Don't know if he got the Up special or not.Happy Autum tomorrow.
Closed the book on Thomas and put him in 'da box until next year. Lots of museum volunteers relieved that that is over for another year. Resting up for Polar (already sold out) that kicks in November 7 and runs for 32 straight days.
Quesstion for MC . With the many bridge problems both US and Canada is there any realistic inspection process that could prevent some of these bridge collaspes ?
